Hi im Henry Lyon and im 18 years old. I’m ready to grow up and live life to the fullest. I love to travel and go on hildays with my two best mates Macus and Nick. We love going to the beach and hanging out together. I live at home with my parents. I havn’t got any siblings. I’m a nice, caring, friendly, chilled out sort of guy.

We go sail-borading. I love doing it its so much fun. Catching a wave is such a big thrill and i enjoy it very much. Its such an adreniline rush and even when your get dunked by a wave you learn from your mistakes and get up and keep on going. When im on my sail-board i feel like everything in my life is perfect. I forget about all my problems and i feel free.

I’ve finished school and i now go to university. I am studying law as i want to become a lawyer. Well that is my aim in life that i hope to achieve. I have worked in a factory with my dad to earn some money to get to where i am now. Apart from that i have never had a job as i havnt needed one becuse i come from a fairly wealthy family. My parents have a fair bit of money. They put money on my credit card and my dad always makes sure i have it for emergencies and things. When i got stuck in Strattford and my car broke down i had to get it repaired and my parents paid for everything without hesitation. I don’t mind being wealthy cause i usually get what i want.

I’m ok with relationships. My girlfriend’s name is Janine and we get along very well and absolutely adore eachother. We met when i was in Strattford. When my car broke down, a lovely guy called trot picked me up and gave me a lift into the local macanic in town. He was a great guy and that night i thought i should repay him so i bought him a few beers at the pub. He brought his girlfriend along which was janine. I ended up inviting them up to where i was staying at the beach with marcus and nick. We all hit it off really well. After i went home a few months later i had a fone call off Janine saying that Trot had been in a terrible car accident and that he didn’t make it. It was a terribly hard time but eveyone managed to pull through.

My ex girlfriend Marcelle and i had a bit of a wierd break up. I thought i loved her but then as we spent more time together we started top drift apart and realised we wern’t meant for eachother. It was a good break up as we both decieded it was for the best.

QUESTIONS:

  1. What is the cartoon at the top of this post suggesting about the citizenship test? The cartoon is suggesting that everyone who is not an australian citizen has to do a citizenship test before they are allowed to become Australian and live in Australia.
  2. What are some of the reasons given for the introduction of the citizenship test? It will ensure that everyone will have a knowledge of Australian values, customs and laws. It will also promote a moderate version of Islam in Australia and help with the fight against global terrorism.
  3. What are some reasons given for people who are against the idea of the citizenship? People are worried because they have fears it could undermine multiculturalism and create division in the community. People also argued that a test could not measure all the factors that make someone a good citizen. It suggested that eligibility for citizenship could also be judged on participation in the community, such as involvement in sporting groups, churches and schools. The Victorian Government said a test could dissuade potential migrants from choosing Australia and adversely affect the state’s skilled migration program, crucial for its economic future. Victoria does not support the introduction of a citizenship test as it risks alienating new arrivals, and would create unwarranted difficulties for a range of vulnerable migrant groups, such as refugees and humanitarian entrants.
  4. Which arguments do you find more convincing? Explain why. I find the arguments for the Australian Citizenship test more convincing because i also believe that people that enter our country should no a bit about Austrlian history as they are going to be living in our country. If they want to live with us they need to know about us and our rules, laws and customs.
  5. What was the White Australia Policy? Research. The White Australia policy is the prevailing term used to describe a collection of racist legislation and policies which were inteended to restrict non-white immigration to Australia, and to promote white immigration, from 1830 to 1982.
  6. What do you think the writer of this piece thinks of the citizenship test: I think that the writer would love the idea of the ‘citizenship test’ because he agrees with the fact that immagrants shouldn’t be allowed into australia so i think that he would think the test is a great idea.
  • What is the purpose of the piece? (Article/Feature/Opinion Piece etc.)
  • What is the writer’s tone? If you are a reader who disagrees with the writer, how would the tone make you feel?
  • What are some of the words the writer uses to describe people who disagrees with?
  • What effect does using words such as these have on the reader’s perception of these people?
  • The article criticises people who overreact to cultural issues – people who worry that people from different backgrounds cannot comfortably co-exist – but is the writer guilty of stirring up such feelings himself?
  • When he describes Muslim areas, what are some of the words he uses?
  • What emotions do you think the writer is appealing to when he says things like’We’re seeing ethnic gangs, too, capable of pack raping women picked out for being “skips”.’ What language tools does he use to emphasise his points?
  • Do you think the writer likes Australian society as it is today? Explain your thinking.
  • The writer says immigrants who are ‘picked’ through the new test won’t need to ‘assimilate.’ Why not?
